Pará Systems Director Full-time

The Pará Systems Director serves as the leader and main contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations, private sector and the academic community in the Landscape. S/he will establish the Conservancy as a driver of system transformation in the landscape, coordinating the work with the conservation strategies in Brazil and regionally: Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, Forests, Water Security and Sustainable Agriculture, and Science, Policy, Marketing and Development Teams and resourcing new competencies that may be required through building internal capacity, developing partnerships or contracting third parties. S/he may play a leading role in donor identification, cultivation and stewardship for the program in the Landscape. S/he will ensure effective collaboration with different stakeholders including the private sector, government, and civil society organizations. S/he will engage local stakeholder support for local conservation efforts, negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect nature in balance with social and economic development needs, and develop and implement conservation strategies.

S/he will establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner in Pará state, define conservation priorities, lead and manage team(s) which supports and improves conservation efforts, and builds strategic, scientific, technical and systems change capacity in the field.


  • Leads the Pará State (whole system) program, coordinating the necessary support from Conservation Strategies, Marketing, Science, Policy and Development Teams under the guidance of the Brazil Conservation Director.

  • Builds the theory of change for the Landscape to deliver effective impact; incorporating and contributing to globally important approaches to balancing the needs of nature and people; and developing full-cost realistic budgets and funding plans.

  • Implements a platform-based approach to effectively drive change in the Landscape, based on systems change theory with multi-stakeholder coordination.

  • Ensures the Landscape program is efficiently described, reported on and adaptively managed internally through the conservation hub and related processes including the definition, monitoring and evaluation of management and impact indicators
  • Manages a cross-functional team that reports directly and indirectly, making them accountable for performance and results.

  • Develops long-term strategies and achieves strategic goals and objectives

  • Cultivates and develops constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.

  • Communicates professionally with a wide variety of people of diverse cultural professional and economic backgrounds for the purpose of developing, negotiating and/or implementing programs and projects.

  • Presents and represents the program and TNC?s vision in compelling, engaging manner to internal and external audiences as lead spokesperson;
  • Practices the Conservancy?s core values.

  • May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.

  • Directs, prepares, presents and/or participates in negotiations of project proposals with governmental, bilateral and/or multilateral agencies.

  • Works well under pressure.

  • Decisions may affect organization?s public image.

  • Decision may have maximum financial and/or legal impact on the organization


  • Bachelor?s degree and experience as a leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector.

  • Experience in applied Agile Management skills.

  • Experience in the design and execution of large and complex environmental projects.

  • Experience in dealing with Agribusiness sector, non-government and community-based organizations and public authorities.

  • Knowledge of the political and social context of the environmental / conservation agenda in Brasil, especially in Amazon region

  • Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team.
  • Portuguese and English fluent verbal and written skills.

  • Communication and presentation skills required.

  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent.

  • Experience in fundraising and budget management.


  • The professional experience, including proven experience effectively leading environmental and conservation issues, in large and complex programs and with measurable results in Brasil in non-governmental, private or public organizations, especially in Amazon region

  • Experience leading environmental issues focused on freshwater, sustainable agriculture, rural economy and sustainable development, smart infrastructure, forests and forest restoration, community conservation and/or integrated landscape management in Brazil and in non-governmental, private or public organizations. Regional or global experience in these issues would be desirable.Manages with systems Leadership: Thinks and acts from a broad perspective with a long-term view and an understanding of 1) the dynamic nature of large-scale challenges and 2) the need for integrating five key practices: skillfully engaging appropriate people; providing a clear process for change; taking a holistic view of situations; focusing on a small number of strategic actions, while learning from and adapting them over time; and being aware of how one's own thinking or patterns of behavior may be limiting change

  • Well organized and self-directed; politically savvy and a team player.

  • High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards.

  • Proven managerial talent in budgeting, staffing, and performance management.

  • Proven technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment, and strong operational focus. Demonstrated operational, implementation and detail-oriented perspective.

  • Experience in leading public policy engagement and external affairs role.

  • Ability to make wise and timely decisions.

  • Manages for leveraging across differences

  • Successful experience in marketing or fund raising desired.
  • Recruits, retains, and manages high quality and effective staff.

  • Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
